Is It Ok to Read Your Speech from Your Iphone?
Sure. But have it mostly memorized people.
The Oscars happened last weekend, and Hannah Beachler
had a historic win for best production design. During her acceptance speech, she read her notes from her iPhone. I polled my social network to see what they thought of this, and most felt it was fine. I would agree, with one caveat. I don't think it matters that she read from an iPhone rather than a notecard, but I do believe that it matters that she read from sentences
, rather than bullet points
.
I imagine it must be an incredibly difficult thing to keep your composure in such a moment; however, it's important to breathe, speak slowly, and make eye contact with the audience. Because Mrs. Beachler was reading full sentences, rather than bullet points, her delivery is quite rushed and feels a little canned. My suggestion: whittle the thank you's down, speak from bullet points, and keep it loose! What do you think?
