Eight Week Accent Reduction Classes – Winter 2010
When?:
Level One: Every Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm starting March 8th through April 26th or Every Friday from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm starting March 12th through April 30th.
Level Two: TBA Spring 2010.
Where?:
The Ripley Grier Studios, 520 8th Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets in Manhattan. The nearest subway station is either Penn Station or Times Square.
Each class is limited to five people.
Level One Course Objectives:
- To be able to identify your core problem American English sounds
- To identify and implement how to change your core problem sounds
- To adjust your speech pattern to fit the rhythm of American English
- To correct improper alignment, and unnecessary speech-related muscular tension
- To build your business vocabulary
Level Two Course Objectives:
- To identify your intermediate level speech problems; diphthong sounds and r-coloring
- To identify and implement proper syllable accentuation
- To learn to link the spoken language effectively
- To implement speech changes into a planned speech or presentation
Both courses will cover the differences between the written and the spoken word, the difference between consonant and vowel sounds, an introduction to the International Phonetic Alphabet, rhythm, intonation and pitch in American English, vocabulary building, and the application of neutral American speech to everyday scenarios such as having a conversation with your colleagues, giving a presentation, reading poetry, or simply answering the phone.
The sessions will consist of instruction, verbal exercises, games, and group mentoring. You will do 20-30 speaking exercises per class. Our teachers keep class fun and interesting!
A book with speaking exercises, and four CD's, with examples of every neutral American sound in the English language, will be provided. Homework will be given each session to ensure your progress.
Level one courses are for students who have limited experience with accent modification, however, this is not a beginner level ESL course! This is a class for people who speak English, and want to excel at it. Level two courses are for students who have completed the level one course, or who have taken at least one accent reduction class in the past.
